A lew minutes later, Barbara sat at the kitchen table, linty sandwich on a cracked porcelain plate she’d found above the counter, a glass of water—the only thing to drink—to its left. Ellen had laughed when Barbara carried the sandwich past her, but Barbara said nothing and kept going.

Maybe Ellen had been right to laugh. Barbara frowned as she picked at the thing. Its meat seemed drier now, the lint, longer and fuzzier, almost sweater-like. She tried scraping it away. It returned as though attracted magnetically to the bread.

But she had to eat—no choice—so she closed her eyes, opened her mouth and bit down. She swallowed hard, gagged. Still, she managed to finish almost a quarter of the sandwich before barfing into the sink.

Todd popped his head into the kitchen. “Did you like the sandwich?” he asked.

Barbara wiped the last remaining trace of throw-up from her lips. “Yeah, it was great.”

In the living room, Ellen continued to enjoy her candy bar.
